  Lauder Cornet and Riders
  Lauder Common Riding
Lauderdale
Thirlestane is 2½ miles from the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Lauder. Every summer twelve Border towns commemorate ancient and local traditions with their spectacular Common Ridings. Lauder holds theirs in the last week of July, after a week of festivities a cavalcade of over 300 ride the Burgh boundaries to remind the townsfolk that they once had to defend their lands.

Thirlestan Castle in the Spring Historic Thirlestane Castle:

About 1590 the Maitlands, later to become the Earls of Lauderdale moved from Thirlestane to the present Thirlestane Castle just outside Lauder. This magnificent castle is well worth a visit.

Lauder from Chesters Hill Scottish Border Towns

The towns of the Scottish Borders each have their own charm with small individual shops, pubs and restaurants serving good food using local produce.

Lauder Golf Course An abundance of Golf:   There are several golf courses in the area including the Championship course at Roxburghe near Kelso.   The Scottish Borders golf courses have the Freedom of the Fairways Golf Passes.   These golf passes are available to buy and are valid between 1 April - 31 October 2010.   Freedom of the Fairways adult, and senior golf passports are available for 3 and 5 days and offer unbelievable value. For example, on a 5 day adult pass if you play 36 holes a day for 5 days it will cost you only £13 per round!

Fishing in the Scottish Borders World class fishing nearby:
The Scottish Borders has everything for the angler. From the internationally famous salmon fishing on the River Tweed itself, to the excellent sea trout fishing on its tributaries; from the rainbow trout in the local lochs to the wilder brown trout in the rivers; and from the course fishing of the lower Tweed to the sea fishing off the Berwickshire coast. There is plenty to choose from, whatever your pocket, and all of it surrounded by the Borders' magnificent scenery.

Southern Upland Way Walking in the Borders:
Walking attracts many visitors to the Scottish Borders.  There are long distance walks including the Southern Upland Way and St Cuthbert's Way and many shorter walks. At Thirlestane we provide books and maps of suggested routes or you can walk from the cottage around the 1200 acres of the farm enjoying the scenery, wildlife and the seasonal farm activities.   The spectacular Berwickshire coast, a 45 minute drive away, a well known attraction for divers, surfers and walkers is quite spectacular with rock pools, small sandy coves and plenty of wildlife.
